Project Motivation & Objectives

Introduction to the Project:

Assiut University network (AUN) is considered one of the oldest Egyptian Universities networks, it was established in 1996. Four sequential stages have been established in years (1996, 1999, 2001 and 2004). The number of network outlets increased to more than 2300 outlets distributed to all faculties through the campus.

The infrastructure of the network uses Fiber Optic Cable as well as Cat-5 UTP connecting different sites through the University campus (departments, laboratories, offices, classrooms).

Six sites off campus within 5 km distance (Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Social work, Faculty of special education, Old University Building, South Egypt Cancer institute, Girls Housing) are connected via 64 Kbps – 128 Kbps leased line. Also, the Faculty of Education at Elwady Elgadid (Located about 220 Km away from the city of Assiut) is connected via 128 Kbps leased line. The main center is connected to the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Universities at Giza via a telephone-leased line; the line connection has been increased from 9.6 Kbps in 1996 to 4 Mbps in 2003.

AUN offer many services such as:

  • Hosting the University home page.

  • Providing E-mail services to about 1000 Faculty members        hosted  at our mail server.

  • Providing Dial-up services via 30 Dial-up lines.

  • Offering training to different sectors inside and out side the  University in the field of the computer and networks.

  • The AUN center is a certified ICDL training and testing center.

  • AUN organize local and national workshops, symposiums and

  • Conferences in the area of IT subject.

The proposed project aims to achieve many benefits to the University environment. It will serve as basic backbone to many others services, such as E-Learning, Digital-Library and information systems, which represent the basic requirement for the contribution of the University to national electronic government.

  • Increase connection rate is planned to from 4 Mbps to 32 Mbps.

  • Enhance the University network performance by chasing the backbone system.

  • Increase connection rate from 4 Mbps to 32 Mbps.

  • Improve reliability, security via firewall and virus protection.
