• The Faculty of Arts was established in Assiut University – located in the city of  Assiut – upon the republican resolution no. (419) 1995 , and the university council resolution issued in 1996.  The study commenced in the academic year 1996/1997. The faculty started with the following five departments :

1-Arabic Language and literature.

2-English Language and literature.

3-French Language and literature.

4-Geography .

5-History .        

• All faculty members of the above departments were transferred from the faculty of Education to the newly established Faculty of Arts, Assiut.   

• Two years later, five more departments were added :

1-Sociology                          2- Media

3-Psychology                        4-Philosophy

5-Libraries, documents and Information.

• A few years later , two  new departments were opened:

1- Archaeology including two sections: ( Ancient Egyptian and Islamic)

2-Eastern languages including two branches: ( Semitic languages , Islamic world languages )

• Hence , the Faculty of Arts currently consists of the following twelve departments

1-Arabic Language and Literature.

2-English Language and Literature.

3-French Language and Literature.

4-Eastern Language and Literature.

5-Geography

6-History

7- Sociology

8- Psychology

9- Media.

10 - Philosophy

11- Libraries , documents and Information

12- Archaeology

Thus , the Faculty of Arts may be viewed as a recent faculty of only around ten years time, the duration of its commencement, yet it is no less influential than any peer faculty  in all Egyptian universities – in that it  plays an effective role in the cultural , mental and literary creativity in upper Egypt in general and the  Assiut region,  in particular during the next few years.

• The current study is the first  self – evaluation report  that  sheds light on the following :

1-The Faculty  Mission Statement

2- Governance  and Administration.

3-Human resources ( Faculty Members and Assistants).

4-Educational programmes .

 5-Academic Standards .

6-Quality of Learning Opportunities .

7-Quality Management .

8-Researches and other Scholarly activities .

9-Community Involvement.

10- Action plan .
