The purpose of Civil
Engineering Department is to prepare an engineer to
understand:
1.
The basics of
statics and dynamics enabling him to analyze different kinds
of
structures leading to their proper and economic design whether these
structures were
steel, reinforced concrete or composite structures. Such
structures could be
multi – story buildings, towers, bridges, … etc.
2. The basic
theories of hydraulics enabling him to design the different water
and marine
structures. In addition, the different modern irrigation systems
and their design
are taught.
3. Design and
operation of different irrigation structures and their
maintenance.
4. The
conventional and advanced methods of surveying including
topography,
photogrametry, geodesy and remote sensing.
5.
Transportation
engineering including the planning and design of highways
and railways .
6. Sanitary and
environmental engineering including the design of cities water
and sewage networks .
The department of
Civil Engineering consists-according to the students
projects in fourth year – of three fields:
a) Structural
Engineering Field :
It is concerned
with theory of structures, strength and properties of
materials, soil
mechanics and foundations, design of reinforced concrete
structures, design
of steel structures.
b) Hydraulics and
Irrigation Field :
It is concerned
with hydraulics, hydrology design of irrigation structures,
navigation and
offshore structures.
c) Public Works
Field :
It is concerned
with traffic engineering and transportation engineering
including the
design of highways and railways. It is also concerned with
surveying, geodesy,
remote sensing and photogrametry. This field also
includes sanitary
engineering covering the planning and design of water
and sewage
networks. The B.Sc. Students Projects in the academic year
2000 / 2001 are:
1) “ Analysis and Design of R.C. Structures “.
2) “ Design of
Special Structures “.
3) “ Irrigation
Engineering “.
4) “ Water
Resources (Hydraulics) “.
5) “ Foundations “.
6) “ Surveying “.
7) “ Sanitary
Engineering “.
8) “ Transportation
Engineering “.
The curriculums of the department are indicated in Tables (2.16 –2.19)
The total number of students at the department in the academic year 2000/2001 is 1434 students (1247 Male and 187 Female), the staff members having Ph.D. degree or Doctor of engineering are 52, and the number of assistants helping in teaching is 20 ( 14 male-6 female ) In the academic year 2000/2001 the overall students /staff ratio is 28/1 ( This is 20/1 when considering the assistants ) These ratios are not adequate and it reflects the desire of students to enroll the civil engineering educational programme, however some measures have to be decided to cope with the department facilities, number of staff members and lechers halls capacities beside students wishes . Details for staff and Department curriculum and laboratory facilities are in the faculty book for staff and courses curriculum.
