In 1957, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy Engineering was established, with the support of Dr. Mohamed Zaki Hathout. In the academic year 1958/1959, the study was actively begun in the department. The number of enrolled students in that year was 29 students; only 7 of them were graduated in 1962. The number of students gradually increased to reach 159 students in the academic year 1966/1967, 159 students in the academic year 1997/1998, 48 of them were females (about 36%), and 355 students in the academic year 2006/2007.

The required period of study in the mining and metallurgy department is four years after the preparatory year in order to obtain a B.Sc. degree in Mining and Metallurgy Engineering. The acceptance in the department comes through the faculty coordination office.
