The Department of Pharmacognosy is considered to be one of the basic and unique departments of the Faculty of Pharmacy where there is no peer in the other practical faculties. The department courses aim to introduce the student to pharmacognosy and the importance of teaching these courses to obtain a nutritional and medicinal sources from natural products (plant, animal or minerals) In this regard, the Department teaches courses that teach students how to identify medicinal plants in their full form or in the form of powder, as well as their biologically active chemical components such as alkaloids, volatile oils, glycosides, vitamins and salts. minerals, etc. and the effect of this chemical content in the treatment of diseases, and then the student will study the chemistry of these active constituents and methods of extraction from their natural sources and ways of identifying of the basic blocks forming these active constituents, and also to study their analytical methods. Then the student moves to study in the final year the course of herbal medicine and the qualitative control of herbal medicines using modern chromatographic and spectral methods for the regulation of these drugs. At the postgraduate level, the department offers a master's degree in pharmacognosy program with three advanced specialist courses and another PhD program in pharmacognosy that includes two specialized courses in some fine research aspects of pharmacognosy. The aim of these programs is to supply the country with distinguished pharmacists who are interested in pharmacognosy and contribute to the application of scientific and research method in the study and exploitation of medicinal plants and natural products available in the local environment.
