1.Germplasm storage of
indigenous plant species of Assiut region such as
pomegranate, Indian jujube (nabq), figs, citrus and
dates.
2.In vitro production of
true-to-type and pathogen free transplants of species
needed in Assiut region( a project supported by USAID on
genetically modified potatoes resistant to potato virus
Y ).
3.Determination of DNA
fingerprinting of plant species indigenous to Assiut
region.
4.Incorporation of foreign
genes in introduced species to indigenous species.
5.In vitro testing of
drought and salt tolerance - dominant in Assiut
environments - of some important species.
6.Embryo rescue of some
important species such as nabq and newly introduced
seedless grapes to overcome some genetic barriers.
7.Detect genetic deviation
resulted from somaclonal variation in in vitro
propagated species.
