Gestational diabetes greatly increases the risk of poor pregnancy outcome, later development of type 2 diabetes for both mother and child and it might also increase the risk of many other complications.

Upper Egypt is historically deprived from social services and rating lower in economic development. This program is challenging as confronted by geographic and demographic factors where poverty is rampant, high rates of unemployment and illiteracy and fragility of social structures.

Goal:

Improve detection and treatment of GDM and reducing the future risk of diabetes in the mother and offspring starting in Upper Egypt cities then extends to all Egypt.

Objectives:

Establish 5 GDM care and control centers in Upper Egypt zone

The existing government healthcare facilities will be strengthened to perform GDM screening and care.

Reduction of the incidence of future diabetes of women that diagnosed with GDM by a proper follow up and education

Training of health care providers.

Local NGO's women self help groups are trained for their effective participation.

Raising the public awareness about the risk factors, prevention & complications of GDM.
