Safe woman initiative

Prof. Tarek El-Gammal, President of Assiut University, emphasized the feelings of reverence and appreciation that the University Administration bears for Egyptian women and its constant endeavor to provide all means of support and care necessary for them, based on its social and enlightening responsibilities as the oldest and largest universities in Upper Egypt.

This came during the events of the opening of the Medical Response Unit to deal with battered women at the Women’s Health University Hospital, in the presence of Prof. Maha Ghanem, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Assiut University Hospitals, and Prof. Tarek Khalaf Al-Husseini, Director Women’s Health Hospital, Prof. Kamal Zahran, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Head of the unit, Dr. Marwa Kadwany, Rapporteur of the National Council for Women’s branch in Assiut, and a group of the Department Professors and Doctors at the hospital.

Dr. Maya Morsi, President of the National Council for Women, and Ms. Jermaine Haddad, the Assistant Representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Egypt, participated in the celebration of the opening of the unit virtually through Zoom application.

The President of Assiut University stated that the unit is the first of its kind at the level of Upper Egypt governorates and the fourth at the Nation-level, which came as a result of the existing cooperation between the University, the National Council for Women and the United Nations Population Fund, which also resulted earlier in the establishment of the first unit to combat violence against women. This is proceeding in accordance with the clear strategy of the University aiming at empowering, protecting and supporting women and providing them with a healthy and safe environment, whether within the University walls or in the surrounding external community. He expressed his thanks and appreciation for the efforts of the National Council for Women and the United Nations Population Fund and their tireless and cooperative role with the university administration in order to improve the living reality and the environment of women in Upper Egypt.

At the beginning of his speech, Prof. Alaa Attia stressed that violence against women is one of the most widespread human rights violations, which negatively affects women's fulfillment of their basic rights to live in peace, noting that this matter represents one of the main concerns of the University Hospital Administration, which has taken upon itself to reduce the psychological burden of the patients. He expressed his admiration and support for the idea of the unit since planning of its establishment three years ago with the help of members of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, which is a successful step in the field of combating violence against women. He pointed out that this unit is set to be one of the most important and the leading units in Upper Egypt in the field of providing educational, psychological and moral service at an advanced level as well as the legal aspect with the participation of distinguished specialists in this field.

On the role and specializations of the unit, Prof. Kamal Zahran explained that this unit came within the framework of the University Administration’s keenness to excel, especially in the field of care provided to mother and child, which is also an extension of the attention paid by the political leadership to this aspect. This was what motivated the University to equip the unit, starting three years ago in cooperation with the National Council for Women and the United Nations Population Fund, which plays a distinguished role in the field of follow-up and treatment of all abused women or those who are victims of violence in its comprehensive sense. Other departments concerned with maternal health includes the Department of Psychiatric and Neurological Diseases, Pediatrics, as well as a group of faculty members in the College of Social Work, and specialists from the Anti-Violence Against Women Unit at the university. The unit also includes a number of medical devices, the most important of which is an advanced ultrasound device, as well as a number of beds.

In her speech via Zoom application, Dr. Maya Morsi praised the efforts of Assiut University as one of the leading universities in Upper Egypt in the field of combating violence against women in all its forms and manifestations, which was met with great approval and unprecedented support from the National Council for Women, declaring her full support for the unit, based on one of its distinguished role, which comes as a continuation of the efforts of the political leadership, headed by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, the President of the Republic, in the need to provide all means and capabilities to activate the performance of units that combat violence against women, hinder their societal mission, or be an obstacle between them and achieving sustainable development in accordance with Egypt’s 2030 vision. All those in charge of the unit aim to support the cases received and to provide them with all means of security and care.

As for Ms. Jermaine Haddad, in her speech, she reviewed statistical figures according to the latest studies that have been conducted to count the number of women who have been subjected to violence, as the number reached 7.8 million women, and less than 1% of this number report this violence. This was a reason for calling for the establishment of units specialized in combating violence against women, especially within medical institutions, where the health service provider is the safe haven to which the victim resorts and feels comfortable with him, stressing that Assiut University was and still is a pioneer in its interest in solving problems and issues of violence against women, as it established a unit to combat violence against women five years ago. At the conclusion of her speech, she thanked all members of the White Army for their steadfastness in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, wishing mercy for the martyrs, and survival and safety for all medical workers.
