Affections of the salivary ducts in buffaloesMisk NA, Semieka MA, Misk TN and Ahmed AFDepartment of Surgery, Faculty of Veterinary MedicineAssiut University, Assiut, EgyptABSTRACT
The aim of the
present study was to determine different affections of the
salivary ducts in buffaloes with special reference to diagnosis
and treatment. The present work was carried out on a total
number of 35 buffaloes suffering form different affections of
the salivary ducts. The majority of cases were collected during
the periodical visits to veterinary clinics in 168 villages
belong to 14 provinces in Egypt during the period from 1994 to
2007. Some cases were recorded in the veterinary teaching
hospital of the faculty of veterinary medicine Assiut
University. The recorded affections of the salivary ducts in
buffaloes include; ectasia of the parotid duct (18), parotid
duct fistula (14) and sialocele (3). Each case was subjected to
full study including case history, clinical examination,
diagnosis and treatment, whenever possible. Exploratory puncture
and radiography were used for confirmation of diagnosis in some
cases. Intraoral marsupialization was performed for treatment of
parotid duct ectasia with highly encouraging results. Salivary
fistula was corrected by one of two successful techniques; the
first by reconstruction of the parotid duct using polyethylene
tube to preserve the function of the gland and the second by
ligation of the parotid duct just caudal to the fistual opening
with nullifying the glands function. Sialoceles were corrected
by removal of the mandibular salivary gland of the affected side
in two animals only. The third animal was not operated by
owner's request. Successful results were obtained in one case
only. The other case failed due to wrong side extirpation of the
gland. In conclusion we can state that salivary duct affections
in buffaloes were ectasia of the parotid duct, salivary fistula
and sialocele. Treatment was available with successful results
and good prognosis in ectasia of the parotid duct and salivary
fistula and guarded in sialoceles.
