Evaluation of Groundwater Resources and Land use, Wadi el-Noqra, East of Kom-Ombo, Aswan Governorate

Pricipal Investigator: Prof. Dr. Samir Riad

In the framework of land reclamation projects in Egypt the government has started to reclaim 65000 Feddans, 50km east of Kom-Ombo, Nile Valley. This project depends mainly on elevating irrigation waters from the Nile along a dug canal.

The present project was erected in order to evaluate groundwater resources in the areas surrounding the government reclamation project, aiminig to supply these areas by irrigation waters from other sources, in case of any shortage in surface water supply for any reason.

Geological, geophysical and soil classification studies were carried out in 8375 feddans around the government land project. Two wells (about 350m deep) were drilled; the first at el-Noqra plain was considered as an observation well. The second at the entrance of Wadi Shait in the north gave with economic flow and suitable salinity for irrigation. An experimental farm (12 feddans) was erected beside the well in order to test suitable non-traditional crops for such a hot region.

This latter well is the first in the region that gives economic recoda for water flow and relatively low salinities suitable for irrigation.
