Assiut University has successfully implemented an innovative initiative for recycling solid waste into new and contemporary furniture within the student dormitories. The project was executed by the Carpentry, Metalwork, Painting, and Upholstery units of the Maintenance Department.
Large quantities of damaged wood resulting from furniture renovations in Dormitory Buildings (1) and (H) for female students were repurposed and transformed into living room sets (sofas and corner seating). These pieces were newly painted and upholstered for placement in the dormitory common areas. Two seating areas have already been completed in Building (1), with work underway to complete an additional four in Building (H).
The initiative also included recycling old furniture and used vehicle tires into comfortable seating units, tables, and decorative wall art. Metal plant stands were fabricated, and empty paint containers were repurposed for planting ornamental greenery, enhancing the aesthetic environment of the dormitories.
