Under the auspices of Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy, President of Assiut University, the Faculty of Education reviewed its Carbon Footprint Initiative report for the 2024/2025 fiscal year. This initiative aligns with the university's commitment to becoming a green university and implementing environmental sustainability standards, in accordance with Egypt's Vision 2030 and international efforts to mitigate climate change.

This review took place during a meeting held on Sunday, April 19th, between Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Adawy, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and the Faculty's Carbon Footprint Measurement Team. The meeting was supervised by Dr. Hassan Hawil, Dean of the Faculty and Head of the Carbon Footprint Initiative, and Dr. Amani Mohamed Sherif, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development and Deputy Head of the Initiative.

Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy emphasized the university's commitment to adopting sustainable environmental policies and promoting a culture of environmental awareness within the university community. He noted that measuring the carbon footprint is a crucial step towards identifying sources of emissions and developing effective mechanisms to reduce them, thus supporting the state's drive towards sustainable development and a green transition.

The meeting discussed the results of the college's carbon footprint assessment study, which was conducted using the advanced Tier 2 methodology. This methodology integrates the institution's actual consumption data with updated national emission factors, ensuring a higher degree of accuracy compared to general estimates. The study also utilized the international Sustrax verification platform and adhered to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) standards.

The study was prepared by Dr. Samah Ahmed Hussein, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Science Teaching Methods and coordinator of the initiative; Ms. Dina Abdullah, Assistant Lecturer at the College of Education; and Mr. Abdelghani Emad, Mr. Emad El-Din Hussein, and Mr. Ahmed Abdel-Azim, all teaching assistants at the college.

The meeting concluded with several recommendations aimed at reducing emissions in the coming period. These include: rationalizing electricity consumption; gradually replacing old cooling equipment with inverter-based systems that use environmentally friendly gases; and implementing a "paperless college" policy to minimize waste.

For his part, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Adawy praised the carbon footprint report, emphasizing the university's commitment to adopting best scientific practices in monitoring and analyzing emissions, developing realistic implementation plans to reduce them, and working to expand the experience to the rest of the university's faculties in the coming phase, in addition to focusing on raising environmental awareness and activating resource conservation initiatives.
