A major medical achievement at the South Egypt Cancer Institute, surgeons successfully perform a complete laparoscopic Whipple procedure to remove a malignant duodenal tumor, showcasing the institute’s advanced capabilities in minimally invasive oncology surgery and its commitment to enhancing healthcare quality in Upper Egypt.
Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, announced the successful completion of a full laparoscopic Whipple procedure to remove a cancerous tumor in the duodenum for a patient from the New Valley Governorate. The operation, which typically lasts 12 hours when performed through open surgery, was completed in just six hours using laparoscopic techniques.
Professor El-Minshawy highlighted that this achievement reaffirms the institute’s leadership in advanced oncology surgeries and its dedication to employing state-of-the-art medical technologies to reduce complications, accelerate patient recovery, and improve the standard of healthcare services in Upper Egypt.
The surgery was conducted under the supervision of Professor Mohamed Abu El-Magd, Dean of the South Egypt Cancer Institute, and Professor Doaa Wadie Maximus, Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology, with the participation of a specialized medical team. The procedure included radical tumor excision with adequate safety margins and the removal of 14 lymph nodes.
Since 2019, the institute has been steadily advancing its laparoscopic surgical programs, given their numerous medical advantages, including reduced blood loss, faster recovery, less postoperative pain, and enhanced quality of life. This latest success underscores the institute’s position as a leading center for cancer treatment in southern Egypt.
