“A New Medical Achievement in Assiut”: Cement Injection for Pelvic Bone Metastases at the South Egypt Cancer Institute

March 20, 2025

Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, has praised the success of the newly established Interventional Radiology Unit at the South Egypt Cancer Institute in performing a series of cementoplasty procedures for patients suffering from secondary pelvic bone tumors. He highlighted that this advanced technique significantly helps reduce patients’ pain and improves mobility, particularly in advanced cases where surgical intervention is not feasible.

Professor El-Minshawy affirmed that this achievement marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to develop the medical and therapeutic system at Assiut University. He commended the expertise of the medical teams who have succeeded in applying cutting-edge global techniques to serve cancer patients across Upper Egypt.

Professor Mohamed Abu El-Magd, Dean of the Institute, explained that cement injection under CT guidance is a precise interventional procedure aimed at stabilizing the bone and alleviating pain by using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).

The procedures were carried out under the supervision of a distinguished medical team, including Professor Amr Farouk Mourad, Professor Haitham Ahmed Sami, Professor Mostafa Hashim, and Professor Maha Hossam El-Araby, with the participation of an anesthesia team led by Dr. Nourhan Alaa, and under the supervision of Professor Sahar Abdel-Baqi. This achievement reflects the integration of medical and research efforts at the Institute, ensuring advanced care and improved outcomes for cancer patients.
