Rooftop cultivation marks a step towards a greener and more sustainable future, aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging the use of underutilized spaces on campus to grow vegetables and medicinal and aromatic plants for food security and sustainable development.
Professor Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, commended the Faculty of Agriculture’s initiative to cultivate rooftops with vegetables, medicinal, and aromatic plants. He affirmed that the project is a pioneering example that contributes to enhancing food security, improving air quality, and reducing the impacts of climate change.
The initiative is led by Professor Adel Mohamed Mahmoud, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and aligns with the Ministry of Higher Education’s strategy to support the national economy and promote environmental awareness.
The President further noted that this initiative provides opportunities for youth and women to start small-scale agricultural enterprises and helps inculcate the importance of farming among children, thereby reinforcing the concept of sustainability within the university and the surrounding community.
