Following her admission to the Trauma Hospital at Assiut University, a medical team in the Vascular Surgery Department successfully saved the life of a young girl who had been shot in the brain.

In a new medical achievement that exemplifies the efficiency of the medical system at Assiut University Hospitals, a medical team in the Vascular Surgery Department at the main hospital successfully saved the life of a 10-year-old girl. She had been admitted to the Trauma Hospital after sustaining a life-threatening injury to the carotid artery supplying the brain from a gunshot wound.

This was achieved under the auspices of Professor Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy, President of the University, and Professor Dr. Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Khaled Abdel Aziz, Director of the Main Hospital, Professor Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hamid Morsi, Director of the Trauma and Emergency Hospital, and Professor Dr. Haitham Ali Hassan, Head of the Vascular Surgery Department.

The trauma hospital received the child in critical condition. She had sustained a gunshot wound to the neck during a gunfight. Medical examination revealed that the bullet had penetrated both the anterior and posterior walls of the right carotid artery (the main blood supply to the brain), posing an immediate threat to her life.

Immediately, a medical team was formed, comprising Dr. Khaled Awad, Lecturer of Vascular Surgery; Dr. Ahmed Hassan El-Shimi, Assistant Lecturer in the Department; Dr. Yahya Mohamed, Assistant Lecturer in the Department; Dr. Ahmed Dawood; and Dr. Hassan Mohamed, both resident physicians in the Department. This team was joined by a distinguished medical team from the Anesthesiology Department, supervised by Professor Dr. Hala Saad Abdel-Ghaffar and Professor Dr. Fatima Abdel-Aal, Anesthesiology Supervisor at the Trauma Hospital. This team included Dr. Moataz Emad El-Din, Assistant Lecturer, and Dr. Ethar El-Qadi, resident physician. A medical team from the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Medical Imaging Department, supervised by Professor Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Magli, also participated. This team included Professor Dr. Hamdi Mohamed Ibrahim, Assistant Professor in the Department, and Dr. Reem Saad El-Shazly, Assistant Lecturer in the Department. A third medical team from the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Medical Imaging Department, supervised by Professor Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Magli, also participated. This team included Professor Dr. Hamdi Mohamed Ibrahim, Assistant Professor in the Department, and Dr. Reem Saad El-Shazly, Assistant Lecturer in the Department. The nursing staff, Professor Mahmoud Bakr and Professor Amr Abdel-Wareth, developed a meticulous treatment plan and decided on immediate and complex surgical intervention to repair the artery and save the child from certain death or a severe stroke.

The medical team announced the complete success of the complex surgery, a fact confirmed by post-operative X-rays, tests, and vital signs measurements. The child was transferred to the intensive care unit for only one day to monitor her vital signs and is currently under close medical observation in completely stable condition.
