The targeted Metabolic and Genetic Research Laboratory is established to be the principal laboratory of the region providing; 1) Quality investigations (diagnostic, teaching, training, research and innovation); 2) Technical coordination with other laboratories; 3) Prediction of possible disorders of newly born infants.
The laboratory also aims to perform the following functions:
- To provide technical advice to regional authorities on the progress, needs and aspirations of the Metabolic and Genetic Laboratory network in the region.
- To assist University and collaborating authorities in planning, organization and supervision of the Metabolic and Genetic Research Projects.
- To assess needs and impart training to Staff of Laboratories in provincial and country laboratories in quality testing for any Metabolic Disease.
- To validate reagents, kits, new reagents that may become available and be used locally and recommend their implementation in the region.
- To organize external quality assessment schemes to periodically assess the quality of testing and suggest measures to those laboratories that show poor performance.
- To undertake research to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of Metabolic and Genetic Laboratory services in the region.
- To collaborate with national and other international agencies on technical matters pertaining to improvement of laboratories.
- We will train and teach and collaborate with Nile Valley Countries colleagues to serve this national goal of strengthening the relation with these Countries.
- The improvement in transport facilities the establishment of Assiut & Sohag airports makes our contact, access and communication both national & international easier and amenable.
- We will help make registries of Metabolic Disease local initially and in Upper Egypt later on as a part of a national registry.
- We will be involved in prenatal and neonatal screening to reduce incidence and prevalence of congenital disease and handicapped rate with all its social and economic impact on the community
