Background
Preterm labor represents a significant issue in maternal andneonatal health, linked to physical discomfort, psychological distress, andcompromised emotional regulation. Nonpharmacological nursing interventionshave the potential to alleviate these symptoms and enhance the health of expectantmothers who are at high risk.
Aim
to evaluate the effects of the unpleasantsymptoms-relief program on pregnant women at risk of preterm labour.
Designand setting
A quasi-experimental pretest/posttest study was implemented atAssiut University, Woman's Health Hospital's Antenatal Care Unit.
Subjects
Apurposive sample of 70 women (35 in each study and control group). Tools ofdata collection: Tool I: preterm labour risk assessment sheet. Tool II: TheDepression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and Tool III: MaternalPhysical Discomfort Scale (MPDS) and Tool IV: Difficulties in EmotionRegulation Scale – version (DERS-16).
Results
Post-intervention, the studygroup showed significant improvements in psychological distress, physicaldiscomfort, and emotion regulation compared with the control group. Extremelysevere anxiety level decreased from 17.1% to 2.9%, while severe depressiondecreased from 17.1% to 0.0%, and extremely severe stress dropped from 28.6%to 2.9%. The proportion of low-risk discomfort rose from 25.7% to 57.1%,whereas very high-risk discomfort declined from 45.7% to 0.0%. The prevalenceof low difficulties in emotion regulation rose from 40.0% to 85.7%.
Conclusion
The Unpleasant Symptoms-Relief Program significantly alleviated psychologicaldistress and physical discomfort while enhancing emotion
