I- Society of Basic and Applied Mycology


II- Workshops:-
Thirteen workshops were accomplished:

1.Entitled "Identification of Aspergillus species and its teleomorphs with special attention to the species which contaminate food materials" during 24-29 March 2001. Twenty participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


2.Entitled "Identification of genera and species of fungi which deteriorate food materials with special attention of toxigenic and pathogenic species" during 27 October - 1 November 2001. Twenty-one participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


3.Entitled "Identification of Penicillium species and its teleomorphs with special attention to the economically important species" during 7-11 April 2002 . Twenty-two participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


4.Entitled "Biodiversity and identification of Fusarium species with special attention to toxigenic and human and plant pathogenic species" during 15-20 March 2003. Dr.Richard Summerbell, Senior Researcher from Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS), the Netherlands, participated in this workshop. Thirty - five participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


5.Entitled "Biodiversity and identification of Aspergillus species and practical detection and identification of their mycotoxins" during 18-23 October 2003. Nineteen participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


6.Entitled " Identification of genera and species of Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes with special attention to toxigenic and human, animal and plant pathogenic species" during 3-8 April 2004. Eighteen participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres, and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


7.Entitled " Medical fungi " during 19 -24 March 2005 Dr. Richard Summerbell from CBS ,Utrecht, Netherlands and Dr. Hester Vismer from Medical Research Institute, South Africa attended and participated in the activities of this workshop. Twenty-four participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities, plus 40 physicians from Ministry of Health.


8.Entitled " Biodiversity of indoor and outdoor air- borne fungi and their role in human , animal , and plant diseases and in food deterioration" during 18-23 March 2006. Twenty - six participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


9.Entitled" Biodiversity and identification of Fusarium species with special attention to toxigenic, and human, animal and plant pathogenic species" ,during 17-22 March 2007 Professor Dr. David Hawksworth from University of Madrid, Spain and the former director of The International Mycological Institute (IMI), Kew Serry, England participated in this workshop. Thirty- three participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


10.Entitled " Ascomycota" during 18-23 March 2008. Thirty - nine participants from Egyptian Universities and research centres and Saudi Arabian , Yemeni, and Libyan Universities.


11. Entitled" Biodiversity of genera and species of fungi which deteriorate food materials with special attention to toxigenic and human and plant pathogenic species" during 7-11 March 2009. Fifty- two participants from Egyptian and Arab universities.


12.Entitled "Fungal Biotechnology" during 8-12 November 2009. Twenty three participants from Egyptian and Arab universities


13.Entitled "
I- Identification of fungi by Morphological and Molecular Biology Techniques, II- Conservation of Fungi" during 6-9 March 2010. Dr. Kerstin Voigt from Jena University, Germany, Dr. David Minter from CABI (Commonweath Agricural Bureau International),England, President of European Myeoloogical Association, Dr. Paul Kirk from CABI, England, and Dr. Jean Mouchacca from the Natural History Museum, Paris, participated in the activities of the workshop. Thirty participants from Egyptian universities


II-Promotion of the culture collection of AUMC from about 1000 strains which belong to about 200 species of fungi, to more than 6000 strains which belong to about 600 species, to become the largest collection in the Arab World.


III-Identification services of fungi were made for researchers from many Egyptian and Arab universities and research centres. Many fungi from medical specimens were also identified for the Assiut University Hospital, and Veterinary Hospital.


IV-Provision of cultures to researchers from several Egyptian and Arab Universities, and institutes.


V-Deposition of cultures of researchers from several Egyptian Universities in the culture Collection of AUMC.


VI-Performance of joint research with the Departments of Dermatology, Gynaecology and Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, Animal Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Plant Pathology, Faculty of Agriculture, Assiut University.


VII-Assay of anti-microbial activity of compounds synthesized by organic chemists in Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science, or extracted from plants by pharmacologists in Pharmacology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy.


VIII-Issue of the first publication on Egyptian Fungi by A.F. Moustafa entitled Zygomycetes in 2006.


IX-Issue of the second edition of the Catalogue of the Culture Collection of AUMC in 2010. (Download PDF copy of the Catalogue).


X-Second publication on Egyptian fungi by A. H. Moubasher, A. M. Moharram & M. A. Ismail entitled "The genus Aspergillus and its teleomorphs" (in Press).


XI-International Organizations and Institution in collaboration with the AUMC:


1-UNESCO subsidized the third workshop organized by the AUMC.


2-Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS), Utrecht, The Netherlands. Dr. Richard Summerbell, Senior Research participated in the activities of the fourth and seventh workshops arranged by the AUMC. Prof. Ahmed Moharram, Vice Director of the AUMC, visited CBS for 3 months in 2005.


3-CABI Bioscience, Egham, England. Prof. Hawksworth, and Dr. David Minter and Dr. Paul Kirk, participated in the activities of the nineth and thirteenth workshops respectively.


4-Institute of Medical Research in South Africa; Dr Hester Vismer from this institute attended the seventh workshop on Medical Mycology.


5-Jena University, Germany; Dr. Kerstin Voigt attended the thirteenth workshop


XII-Establishment of the Society of Basic and Applied Mycology: It was established officially affiliated to the Ministry of social Affairs in 15 Jan.2005. Its objectives are:


a- Promotion of knowledge and awareness about fungi in Egypt, Arab Countries and outside the Arab Countries


b- Issue of quarterly periodical journal which publishes original papers in the following fields of fungi: physiology, Ecology, Taxonomy, Fungal Biotechnology, Plant, Animal and Human Pathology.


c- Arrangement of conference of basic and applied mycology every three or four years in which are delivered original lectures or exhibited original posters in the different fields of mycology.


d- Strengthening the relationships between the academic persons interested in fungi in the fields of Basic sciences, Agriculture, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Pharmacy in Egypt, Arab world and outside the Arab world.
