عرف الإنسان ظاهرة التزين منذ أقدم العصور، حيث كانت ترتبط في المقام الأول باحتياجاته، سواء كانت احتياجات عضوية أم عقائدية أم اجتماعية، وعلى مر العصور التاريخية المختلفة عرف الإنسان المصري مكملات الزينة واستخدم في صناعاتها خامات مختلفة، واستمر هذا الاهتمام بمكملات الزينة إنتاجاً واستخداماً حتى وقتنا الحالي. ويعتبر التراث الفني مصدراً هاماً من مصادر استلهام الفنان الشعبي بما يحمله من قيم فنية وتقنية لها دورها في إثراء التشكيل الفني النسجي ، والفنون الشعبية تعد أحد مصادر التراث التي لا تزال تعيش وتتوارث جيلاً بعد جيل فهي التعبير المباشر عن واقع الشخصية المصرية ، فهي تتمثل بمأثوراتها المتواصلة وموروثاتها المتعاقبة دوراً هاماً مؤثراً في معالم وسمات الأعمال الفنية المعاصرة ، ويتحدد هذا الدور طبقاً لطبيعة الدراسات العلمية في كشفها عن مكونات هذا الإبداع وأشكاله وإدراك عناصره في نختلف مجالات التعبير الأصلية ثم توظيفها مرة أخري علمياً وفنياً في مجالات التشكيل الفني( ).
وباعتبار الفنون الشعبية كانت وما تزال أحد الأنماط الفريدة التي أثْرت الحياة الإنسانية بأشكالها الخاصة الجذابة وصورها ورموزها الشائعة وألوانها المتميزة التي تجذب اهتمامات العامة والخاصة من البشر على اختلاف أجناسهم وطبقاتهم، وعلى تعدد اتجاهاتهم وأساليبهم وتباين أذواقهم ؛حيث تقوم أول ما تقوم على صدق الفطرة وصفاء النفس وعمق الوجدان في تعبيراتها الجريئة وطرق تنفيذها واختيار موادها ووحداتها من واقع بيئاتها التي تحيى داخلها.وإنتاج أشياء نافعة للإنسان في حياته اليومية وفي الوقت نفسه جميلة، فكرة قديمة قِدم الإنسان، فقد كان الإنسان البُدائي يُجَمِّل الحراب التي يستعملها في الصيد إما بزخارف هندسية محفورة عناصرها الخطوط المتوازية والمتقاطعة أو المثلثات، أو برسم أشكال حيوانات عليها.وعلاقة الإنسان بالتزين " تعرضت لتطورات هائلة واكبت تتابع فترات تاريخ الإنسان وعلى اختلاف مناطق معيشته، وذلك بفضل تأثير العوامل الحضارية المتغيرة.
ومهما اختلفت هذه العوامل زماناً ومكاناً حتى أصبح متصلاً وهو رغبة الإنسان في التزين بالحلي ، مما جعل تلك الرغبة ظاهرة تستحق الدراسة والبحث. فالحلي مرآة ينعكس عليها المفهوم الجمالي، وهى مظهر من مظاهر الذوق الفني ، فهي دراسة لعادات المجتمع وتقاليده، كما إنها دراسة للصلات الإنسانية بين أفراده، والتي تبين أذواق الناس ومفهومهم الجمالي وميولهم الروحية وإمكانياتهم المادية .
