Master Degree

Fields of study
Assiut University, based on the proposal of the Council of the Molecular Biology Research & Studies Institute, grants a master's degree in different specializations enclosed in the Institute's by scientific departments outlined in Chapter (3). The name of the scientific department/ specialization and the title of the thesis are indicated in the certificate.
Registration Requirements
In addition to what is stated in Article No. 21 of the Institute Internal Bylaw, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • To hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the fields described in Article No. 18 of the Institute Internal Bylaw from one of the Egyptian universities subject to the Egyptian universities regulation law, or an equivalent degree from another recognized scientific institute, with at least “Good or C" overall grade.
  • Students holding a diploma from the Molecular Biology Researches & Studies Institute at Assiut University or a diploma in the field of specialization from one of the Egyptian universities subject to the Egyptian universities regulation law with at least a general "Good or C" grade, will be exempt from some of the courses they previously studied in the diploma. This shall be determined by the relevant department council and approved by the Institute Council.
  • Students holding suitable bachelor’s degree but with "Pass or D"  grade, must obtain a graduate diploma from the Molecular Biology Researches & Studies Institute with at least a "Good or C" general grade.
  • Student holding Diploma from the Molecular Biology Researches & Studies Institute with an overall "Pass or D" grade will not allowed to register in the master’s degree of the same field of specialization before passing a qualifying phase. This include at least 12 credit hours of complementary courses determined by the department as with at least an overall grade of "Good or C") These courses are not calculated the Master program required hours nor enter into the CGPA calculation of the Masters courses.
  • Student is required to devote himself for at least two days/week for the study.
  • Applying students are required to  submit their application along with all required documents (mentioned below) and the necessary forms to the Institute's Postgraduate Office within the designated times.  Postgraduate office will transfer the application and documents to the relevant scientific department to obtain their approval and to appoint a supervising committee that one of its members will serve as the student’s academic advisor. The official date of student enrollment is the date of final approval by the Institute Council after the approval of the University Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Researches Affairs.

Required documents:

  • Birth certificate.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • The academic record for the bachelor’s degree.
  • A certificate of military service performance or the approval of the Organization and Training Authority of the armed forces to study, or evidence that the military service was postponed or exempted.
  • Academic Postgraduate graduate diploma certificate and academic record (for whom this case applies)
  • Approval of the employer for applicants working in the government or public and private business sectors, while those who do not work submit a declaration stating their commitment to attend study.
  • For non-Egyptian students, registration is considered in accordance with the procedures for admission of international students determined by the Supreme Council of Universities.
  • The department council may, after the approval of the Institute Council, hold an admission examination for applicants or set other conditions to determine the number of admitted persons according to its capabilities.
  • The Institute shall consider the implementation of the decisions of the University Council regarding the registration for the Master's degree.

Period offered for Admission
It is required for the student to register for a master’s degree that the period since obtaining the last academic qualification does not exceed ten years

Duration of study

  • The period of study for obtaining a master's degree may not be less than two years (before the formation of the Judging Committee for the thesis), with a maximum of four years.
  • Student registration will be canceled if he failed to obtain the master’s degree after the end of the fourth year starting from the date of his enrollment. However, the Institute council may decide to keep the registration for other periods upon the request and report submitted by the supervisory committee after the approval of the department council and the Postgraduate studies committee (taking into account the decisions of the university council organizing that matter).

Courses
The relevant department council determines before the start of the academic year the academic courses that will be taught to the student during the academic year, from among the list of courses from code 5001 according to the attached tables. These decisions are to be approved by the Vice Dean for postgraduate studies and researches and the Institute Council.
Study requirements

  • The total number of hours to obtain a Master's degree is thirty-six credit hours.
  • The competent department council determines the student’s courses that are suitable for the specialization division. Courses with a total of 24 credit hours at least are to be selected from among the courses curriculum approved by the institute’s council (Dept. code + 5001). The institute’s Vice Dean for postgraduate studies and research approves these selected courses.
  • The student conducts a thesis research on a topic determined by the main supervisor and approved by the relevant department council, the Postgraduate Studies and Research Committee, and the council of the institute. The student is assigned with 12 credit hours for thesis research with a symbol (Dept. Code + 5000) during preparation of the thesis.
  • Before starting the thesis preparation, the student must pass the TOEFL exam in the English language with a least score of 450, or other equivalent English language examination recognized by the Egyptian universities. The student may be exempted from this exam if he provides evidence of his success at this rate during the four years preceding the date of his enrollment for the degree.
  • Before starting the thesis preparation, the student must pass the "Scientific rules for the preparation and writing of scientific research" training course. This course is not included among the total number of study credit hours.
  • The Institute Council may, based on the recommendation of the Supervision Committee, authorize the student to carry out some of his research in another scientific institute or in another recognized body to achieve some of the research requirements.
  • The approval of the Institute Council on student registration is a tacit approval of all courses registered to the student in the registration form.
  • The lists in Appendix No. (1) of the Institute Internal Bylaw show the curricula of various specializations for the master's and doctorate degrees, according to the academic departments of the institute.
  • Articles No. 24, 25 26 of the Institute Internal Bylaw apply to the rules for study, courses evaluation and exams controls.
  • The student shall receive an academic warning if he failed to obtain an overall average score of "Good or C" of studied courses. In such case, upon a request from his supervisory committee, the student is offered to study additional courses until he obtains the required score. This act has to be approved by the department council, the postgraduate studies and research committee, and the Institute’s council.

Degree Awarding Requirements

  • To obtain a master's degree, the following requirements has to be fulfilled:
  • Student's study and research shall be continued for at least two academic years starting from the date of his research topic registeration approval by the Institute's Council.
  • Student's thesis research has to be conducted on the subject approved by the Institute Council based on the approval of the supervisory committee-submitted proposal by the relevant department council. 
  • Student has to pass all assigned academic courses with at least an average grade of "Good or C".
  • The student has to present the results of his research in a special seminar before the staff members of the relevant department prior to forming the Judging and Defense Committee
  • Student has to publish a research paper or at least submit a publication acceptance of his work in one of the recognized scientific journals or international conferences approved by the Institute council.
  • Shall the student passes the academic courses and fulfills the study requirements, he has to submit the results of his research in a "Thesis". Thesis has to be accepted after his defense by the Judging Committee after his defense.
  • The student has to  submit the required copies of the approved thesis by the Judging Committee after making the necessary amendments.
  • Shall the student passes the thesis Defense, he has to make necessary amendments and submit required paper and electronic copies of the Judging Committee approved thesis to be delivered to the relevant authorities in accordance with the rules approved by the university.

M.Sc. Certificate

  • The date of granting the academic degree is the date of approval by the University Council.
  • Graduation form: The institute's postgraduate office prepares the graduation form for the graduates, including the main and sub specialization (if any) according to the registered specialization in the relevant department and the title of the thesis according to the internal regulations of the institute.
