The department consists of:

* Anesthesia unit:

1. -That deals with patients undergoing different types of surgeries (extirpative or reconstructive) or other procedures that may require anesthesia (as diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopies, laparoscopies, radio-ablations for malignant foci, bone marrow biopsy and aspiration and radiotherapy, for children, using linear accelerator). 
2. -Various types of cancer surgeries are done at the institute; breast and breast augmentation surgeries, liver surgeries, GIT surgeries, microscopic surgeries and pediatric surgeries, each of which requires different anesthetic management. 
3. -These activities take place in an operative ward that consists of 4 operative theatres equipped with central gas pipe system, advanced anesthetic and monitoring devices, and suction units. 

* Intensive care unit:

1. That deals with critical cancer patients; as patients in the postoperative state following major surgeries and patients with critical medical problems referred from other departments of the institute. 
2. Providing continuous full monitoring and intensive medical and nursing care for these critical patients.   
3. The unit consists of:
4.  An intensive care unit; containing 8 beds and is equipped with advanced monitoring systems, mechanical ventilators, and a blood gas analyzing device.
5.  Intermediate care unit containing 4 beds for less critical cases (a high dependency unit). 
6. Medical consultation is also provided to other departments to participate in the management of certain problems (haemodynamic instability, respiratory problems, acid-base and electrolyte disturbances and care for the comatose).

* Pain unit:

-The pain unit provides pain relief therapy for cancer patients by different methods: 

1. Analgesics and pain killing drugs (following the latest WHO guidelines for pain management), these drugs are available at different forms to be suitable for use by different types of patients (among these forms are: immediate release capsules, sustained release tablets, rectal suppositories, skin patches and injectable preparations).   
2. Different types of interventional cancer pain management comprising nerve blocks and nerve ablations available to control cancer pain (using nerve stimulator, guided by sonar or CT scan). 
3. Other alternative techniques in pain management. 

- Pain unit comprises both an outpatient clinic and an inpatient unit for fulfilling the requirement of the previous items.

Thus, it is quite clear that Anesthesia department works in an intimate relation with other departments of the institute providing the best medical service for cancer patients in order to help them to lead a normal life.
