In cooperation with the National Transport Institute and the Ministry of Transport, and with the approval and generous support of Professor Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy, President of the University, and under the auspices of Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Mawla, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, Professor Dr. Khaled Salah Saeed, Dean of the Faculty, and Professor Dr. Mohamed Safwat Mohamed Abu Raya, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Mahmoud Mohamed Ahmed Awais, Professor of Roads and Traffic in the Civil Engineering Department, students from the Civil Engineering Department participated in the national study on modeling trip generation rates for Egyptian universities. This study, conducted in cooperation with the National Transport Institute and the Ministry of Transport, aims to develop accurate local trip generation rates based on real field data, thereby supporting sound traffic planning and improving the efficiency of the transportation system around major educational institutions.
Professor Dr. Khaled Salah, Dean of the Faculty, explained that:
The university's participation in such national studies reflects the academic standing of the university and the faculty, embodies academic excellence and national responsibility, and demonstrates its effective contribution to supporting development plans and building a more efficient and sustainable future. His Excellency also affirmed that the university's approval to participate in this study underscores the national and scientific role of Assiut University and the Faculty in actively contributing to research projects with developmental and strategic dimensions for the country. He expressed his gratitude to Professor Dr. Ahmed El-Menshawy, President of the University, and Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Mawla, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, for their generous approval of participation in the study and for allowing students to participate in the monitoring activities, which are highly beneficial to their academic development.
Professor Dr. Mahmoud Awais, the supervisor of the project at Assiut University, explained that the fieldwork plan involved distributing students across seven main gates of Assiut University to conduct traffic surveys and monitor the entry and exit of pedestrians and vehicles of all types, recording data regularly every 15 minutes to ensure the highest levels of accuracy and discipline in data collection. It was also decided that the monitoring activities would take place over two academic days, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, to measure the variations in traffic patterns. This would allow for the identification of morning and afternoon peak hours and the accurate scientific analysis of traffic density at each gate.
The importance of this participation stems from the fact that it is not merely field training, but rather reflects the contribution of college students to a national project aimed at supporting decision-making in the fields of transportation and urban planning. Through their participation, they will provide data that will help in understanding traffic patterns, improving gate organization, allocating operational resources, reducing congestion, and increasing the efficiency of traffic flow within and around the university. This experience also gives students a real opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in practice and refine their skills in monitoring, analysis, and organized fieldwork, thus enhancing their professional readiness and confirming their academic excellence.
