Mission:

The mission of the department is to enhance the opportunities in Pathology across the hospitals and the affiliates and to ensure that the interactions among the various Pathology are synergistic. As one of the preclinical departments, the mission is to provide a research academic environment that allows our faculty, students, fellows and staff not only to succeed, but to excel. Our goal is to advance our fundamental understanding of the pathology and the pathophysiologic mechanisms of disease, and to bring this knowledge to others through teaching and publication.

Pathology Units:

Cytopathology

The cytopathology services of the Department of Pathology perform Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) biopsies, cytology, and exfoliative cytology diagnosis. Over 100 cases are processed monthly for patients from SECI. Specialty of pathology on a cellular level with a focus on the diagnosis of diseases through specimens derived from fluids or smears. The Cytopathology Laboratory also does testing on specimens from virtually any body site.

Immunohistochemistry

The Immunohistochemistry Core (IHC) provides extensive options requiring special histochemical and immunohistochemical staining of human tissue sections as its main focus by antigen retrieval and immunostaining using a large number of antibodies is part of the IHC. The pathway for a pathology report are most often sent by surgeons from the operating room or from physicians' offices directly to the pathologist for examination. The specimens are transported in special containers with a pathology laboratory requisition attached that contains all of the relevant information on the patient, specimen, and the referring physician.

Research Histopathology:

Research Histopathology consists mainly of Immunohistochemistry IHC core. We now have a tissue banking equipment which is hopefully will be used for either transplantation by banking stem cells or genetic and immunostaining examination.

Practice of pathology:

Pathology specialty areas at Pathology Department include: Physicians that practice as pathologists are frequently described as the “Doctor’s Doctor” because, with a few important exceptions, they generally interact with a patient’s physician rather than with the patient directly. The medical practice of pathology is dedicated to the general study of disease and its processes as well as the specific diagnosis of disease, since pathologists investigate the clues to diseases and injuries through the examination of organs, tissues, body fluids, cells, and molecules.

The pathway of a specimen for diagnosis:

In preparation for a pathology report, specimens are most often sent by surgeons from the operating room or from physicians’ offices directly to the pathologist for examination. The specimens are transported in special containers with a pathology laboratory requisition attached that contains all of the relevant information on the patient, specimen, and the referring physician.

Residency Programs:

The pathology residency program training includes hands on experience and responsibility in diagnostic surgical pathology and autopsy pathology, laboratory research, student teaching and progressive supervisory responsibilities up to the level of Junior Attending. Pathology residents are strongly encouraged to participate in investigative projects and present their work at scientific meetings.

Patient Records at pathology department of SECI:

Physicians have been assigning “clinic numbers” to their patients and logging all data under each patient’s unique number. The first patient enrolled in this system was assigned the number 1, followed by 2, 3, 4, and so on. the vast majority of their records are now available electronically. Physicians, medical students, and other allied health staff have access to these records, and consequently, this system for managing health care records has greatly enhanced and streamlined the care administered to patients. This patient record system has also greatly facilitated research, outcome tracking, and the transfer of care from one physician to another. At any time, a physician may access any other physician’s notes from any department on any of their patients, a task made considerably easier by the adoption of the electronic medical record. Large groups of patient files that meet certain criteria can be retrieved for purposes of research, review, and discussion.

Pathologist’s Assistant

High degree of professionalism, attention to details, demonstrated ability to teach, ability to work within a team atmosphere as well as independently, strong communication with the pathologists, he assists pathologists in the examination and dissection of human specimens. Specific duties include but are not limited to: description and examination of body parts removed during surgery; submission of tissue samples for other testing; summarization of patient's medical records; preserve and process specimens and assist with training of medical school students, pathology residents, fellows and assistants.

The current faculty members in the central department are as follows:

Professor Doctor Etmad Helmy Yassin

Head of pathology department

A pioneering contribution to the foundation of this pathology department at the cancer institute was done by professor Etmad Helmy Yassin who established the basis for this department at 2006.

Previous efforts have been done by professor Moheb Fakry Danial.
