Assiut University Continues to Excel in International Publication and Advances the Quality of Scientific Research in 2024
Under the patronage of Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, and the supervision of Dr. Gamal Badr, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, the university has unveiled the results of its 2024 analysis of research performance and international publication , which showed that the university continues to achieve remarkable progress in terms of quantity and quality in scientific publication, according to data extracted from Scopus and Web of Science databases, through the SciVal platform that evaluates the research performance of academic institutions globally.
In this context, Dr. El-Minshawy expressed his pride in the university’s research achievements throughout the year, affirming that this performance reflects the university’s strategic vision to enhance the quality of scientific research and align it with the goals of sustainable development. He commended the substantial contributions of the university’s researchers and faculty members in attaining this advanced level of excellence, noting that the university remains committed to supporting researchers through internal funding as well as by encouraging them to apply for externally funded research projects, with the aim of strengthening the university’s standing in international rankings.
The report revealed that the number of internationally published research papers from Assiut University, according to Scopus, was 2,131 in 2021, 2,410 in 2022, slightly declining to 2,360 in 2023 and 2,350 in 2024. Despite this slight drop in volume, the quality of publications has notably improved. Specifically, the number of articles published in journals categorized as “Others”—which are not ranked within the Q1 to Q4 quartiles and lack impact factors—decreased significantly from 226 papers in 2022 to only 121 papers in 2024. This clearly reflects the university’s shift toward enhancing publication quality and directing researchers to publish in journals with international rankings and reputations.
In terms of Web of Science, the world’s leading reference for evaluating scientific journals and academic institutions, the university continued to make progress in publication volume: 1,946 papers were published in 2021, 2,184 in 2022, 2,216 in 2023, and 2,229 in 2024. The university has maintained a high level of quality in these publications over the years, with approximately 78% of its papers published in Q1 and Q2 journals, confirming the institution’s excellence in research output.
The analysis also showed that around 66% of the university’s international publications over the past two years resulted from collaborative research with foreign universities and institutions, demonstrating Assiut University’s growing international presence and scientific openness. Additionally, about 19% of the research published in 2024 came from local collaborations with Egyptian universities, supporting national integration and joint research efforts.
For his part, Dr. Gamal Badr highlighted that these research achievements are the outcome of a clear strategy that supports publishing in high-impact journals, provides a stimulating research environment, and ensures funding from the university’s own resources, while also encouraging researchers to seek external funding opportunities. He added that the university succeeded in attracting funding for external research projects amounting to about 4,948,000 US dollars during the current year, which contributed significantly to supporting the scientific research system and developing the capabilities of researchers.
The report also confirmed that the international publications from Assiut University in 2024 addressed
all the Sustainable Development Goals. This reflects the university’s commitment to its social and research responsibilities, and reinforces its pioneering role in addressing both national and global challenges through purposeful and distinguished scientific research.
