15.3.3 -The University's local biodiversity

SDG15
Details:

Yes. Assiut University explicitly includes local biodiversity considerations in its campus planning and development processes, including construction projects. The Assiut University Green Buildings Policy requires that all new construction, renovations, and landscaping projects promote sustainability through open spaces, green areas, and biodiversity-friendly designs. Nearly 82% of the campus is dedicated to open spaces, and landscaping integrates native plant species to support local ecosystems. The university has a formal biodiversity policy aligned with national and IUCN guidelines. It encourages:

  1. Preservation of existing trees and habitats during development.

    1. Introduction of native and diverse plant species to enhance ecological resilience.

    2. Collaboration with conservation organizations to protect endangered species and maintain ecological balance.

Assiut University ensures that all construction projects follow sustainability principles. Each project incorporates site practices such as wood recycling, water conservation, and natural ventilation to reduce environmental impact. Green infrastructure is a key feature, with arboretums, botanical gardens, and training farms established to serve as biodiversity hubs. Additionally, environmental risk management strategies are applied throughout development to minimize habitat disruption and protect local ecosystems. The university organizes workshops and research programs on sustainable land management and biodiversity conservation, ensuring these principles are embedded in planning and development.

Faculty of Agriculture:

The faculty has implemented one of the modern educational systems that relies on practical practices to solve problems. Therefore, it has taken the initiative to train students from the Department of Rural Community and Agricultural Extension on real-world issues, using modern scientific methods to find suitable solutions.

A dedicated greenhouse was established for students, where they cultivate environmentally friendly plants and trees. Under the scientific supervision of the university and faculty, students plant these species based on previously identified environmental needs. Following the success of this activity, a new greenhouse was created for ornamental, medicinal, and aromatic plants to preserve rare species of plants and trees.
