As part of Assiut University’s efforts to enhance the efficiency of its university hospitals and alleviate the burden on patients, Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, announced the successful completion of 12 corneal transplant surgeries by the medical team at the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Unit of Assiut University Hospitals. These surgeries were performed for patients on the waiting list throughout 2024.
Dr. El-Minshawy congratulated the medical team at the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Unit on their success in performing these highly delicate procedures, which require exceptional skill and expertise. He praised the level of medical cadres at Assiut University hospitals, emphasizing their excellence in providing high-quality medical services that contribute to improving the health system in Upper Egypt.
The university president highlighted that the total number of corneal transplants performed since the unit’s establishment in 2019 has reached 60 cases. These surgeries are conducted for patients from various governorates in Upper Egypt, funded by the state. He also noted that three corneal transplant surgeries have already been performed since the beginning of 2025, offering renewed hope to patients suffering from vision impairment.
Dr. El-Minshawy stressed that Assiut University hospitals have achieved remarkable successes in eliminating waiting lists in many medical specialties, which contributed to saving patients' lives and alleviating their suffering, while providing urgent surgeries with the highest accuracy and efficiency.
The university president praised the great support that the Egyptian state gives to university hospitals, and the interest in providing all the necessary resources to improve the performance of hospitals, which contributes to raising the level of medical services provided to citizens.
The medical team is working to provide the highest levels of care, under the supervision of Dr. Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals, Dr. Khaled Abdel Aziz, Director of the main university hospital, and Dr. Tarek Ahmed Ali, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology . The team includes a group of professors and consultants, including: Dr. Mohamed Saad Abdel Rahman, professor of ophthalmology and head of the unit, Dr. Magdy Mostafa, assistant professor of ophthalmology, Dr. Momen Khodair, professor of ophthalmology, and Dr. Wael Ali, ophthalmology specialist and coordinator of the hospital's waiting lists.
Dr. Mohamed Saad, head of the Cornea and Vision Correction Surgery Unit, explained that the unit was established to treat corneal diseases, the leading cause of blindness in Egypt, by performing corneal transplant surgeries , vision correction surgeries and laser surgeries. He also emphasized the unit's role in supporting scientific research, as research resulting from the treated cases is published in prestigious medical journals, in addition to training young doctors to perform surgeries and gain practical experience. He pointed out that the unit provides a clinic dedicated to receiving cases referred from other departments, and operates on Sundays every week, free of charge.
