In continuation of the medical successes achieved by Assiut University Hospitals in the field of performing microsurgical operations, under the supervision of Prof. Ahmed El-Minshawy, president of the University, and Dr. Alaa Attiyah, dean of the Faculty of Medicine and chairman of the board of University Hospitals, a joint medical team from the Departments of Neurosurgery, Spine, and cardiothoracic surgery, succeeded in performing a microsurgical operation to remove a tumor in the thoracic mediastinum, extending the spine, to a girl at the Faculty of physical education, aged 20 years, using the technique of surgical Thoracoscopy and a modern surgical microscope.
This came under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Ayad, head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, Dr. Mohammed Abdel Basset Khalaf, head of the neurosurgery and spine Department, director of the neurological diseases and Neurosurgery Hospital, and Dr. Hala Saad Abdul Ghaffar, head of the anesthesia, intensive care and pain treatment Department.
Prof. Ahmed El-Minshawy congratulated the medical team for its success in conducting this delicate operation, praising the excellence of the medical staff at Assiut University Hospitals, and their vital role in providing medical service at a high level of professionalism and skill, and using the latest methods, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in order to provide the best possible health care, thanking the medical team for its success in conducting this delicate and urgent operation for the patient and her return to practice her university studies.
The University Hospital in Assiut received the case of the patient, who was suffering from a chronic cough, accompanied by nausea, chest pain, and during the follow-up of the case with rumors and clinical examination, it was found that there was a tumor in the chest, extending through the nerve canal of the spinal cord.
After the examination and inspection, a joint medical team was formed in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Spine, cardiothoracic surgery, to perform the operation and remove the tumor, and the operation took 4 hours, during which the latest surgical techniques, "surgical thoracoscope and surgical microscope", were used to completely remove the tumor from around the spinal cord, and from inside the chest; through a small lateral opening in the chest, a small opening in the back, the condition recovered, and returned to her daily activities and university studies.
