3.3.6 Smoke free policy

SDG3
Details:

Smoke-free policy:

Assiut University is committed to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3): Good Health and Well-being by providing a healthy, safe, and smoke-free environment for all students, faculty members, staff, , patients, and visitors.

Since 2014, Assiut University has implemented and maintained a comprehensive Smoke-Free Campus Policy. Smoking is prohibited in all university buildings, healthcare facilities, classrooms, laboratories, offices, and throughout the campus. The policy aims to protect the university community from the harmful effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke while promoting healthy lifestyles, enhancing occupational and public health, and supporting environmental sustainability.

The University continues to strengthen the implementation of this policy through awareness campaigns, educational activities, institutional regulations, and ongoing monitoring to ensure a healthy and tobacco-free campus for everyone. Smoking-free policy was revised in 2025.

The Smoking Cessation Unit at the Faculty of Medicine, Assiut University, was established in 2023, building upon the efforts initiated in 2009 through the Egyptian Anti-Smoking Society, The Unit was established in recognition of the importance of raising awareness about the harmful effects of smoking and promoting healthy behaviors within the university community. To support smoking cessation and health awareness, educational and awareness seminars detailing the risks of tobacco use and strategies to quit were organized for faculty and staff across Medicine and Pharmacy departments. Complementing these educational efforts, comprehensive questionnaires were distributed among employees to identify smokers, assess their readiness to quit, measure exposure to secondhand smoke, and gauge knowledge of tobacco-related health hazards. Furthermore, the initiative actively promoted evidence-based action by conducting and supporting scientific research on smoking consequences while engaging students directly in research and the creation of awareness materials.

A Pulmonary rehabilitation and Smoke Cessation Clinic has been established on 2 November 2025 at Assiut University Hospitals with 72 beneficials.
