Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, praised the success of a medical team from the Departments of General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Assiut University Hospitals in saving the life of a 50-year-old patient suffering from a rare congenital chest defect that caused his health condition to deteriorate. The medical team was able to perform an urgent and accurate surgery during which the diaphragm was repaired and the left lung was restored to its normal size, stabilizing the patient's health condition and discharging him from the hospital after his full recovery.

The President of Assiut University congratulated the medical team on this important success, which reflects the extent of cooperation and scientific integration between various medical specialties within the university hospital system. He also emphasized the excellence of Assiut University doctors and their ability to deal with the most complex surgeries, which contributes to providing the best medical services to patients and supporting Egypt's vision in the field of advanced healthcare.

This success confirms Assiut University's commitment to continuously improving the quality of healthcare and providing medical services that meet international standards, under the supervision of Dr. Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals, and Dr. Khaled Abdel Aziz, Director of the main university hospital.

The general reception at Assiut University Hospitals received a 50-year-old patient suffering from physical fatigue, severe difficulty breathing, and hypoxemia, so emergency physicians intubated the patient and put him on a ventilator. A CT scan of the chest revealed a rare congenital defect: the absence of a diaphragm on the left side of the chest, the presence of a large part of the small intestine, colon, and some abdominal organs inside the left part of the chest, in addition to severe shrinkage of the left lung.

After assessing the case, the medical team decided to perform an urgent surgery. The procedure involved an abdominal exploration, repositioning of the intestines, colon, and other internal organs back into the abdomen, removal of the spleen, and diaphragm repair using a surgical mesh to separate the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. Additionally, the team successfully restored the left lung to its normal size. Following surgery, the patient was transferred to the general intensive care unit, where his condition stabilized, and he was weaned off mechanical ventilation three days post-surgery.

The patient’s test results showed significant improvement a week after the operation. After two additional days of observation, he was transferred to the inpatient ward to ensure continued lung function recovery and overall stability. The patient returned to eating all foods by mouth with no complaints. The patient's condition was stabilized and he was discharged from the hospital.

The medical team from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery was supervised by Dr. Mohamed Ayyad, head of the department, and consisted of Dr. Mohamed Zeidan, lecturer of cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Ahmed Samir, assistant lecturer of the department, and Dr. Ahmed Wahba, Demonstrator in the department.
