Research Abstract

ThelowfaultcurrentphenomenainthestandaloneMicro-Grid(MG)isaresultofelectronicinterfacingof
theMGDistributedGenerators(DGs).DuetolowfaultcurrentphenomenaonthestandaloneMG,thereis
a difficultyindifferentiatingbetweenthefaultdisturbanceandtheoverloadconditions.Thispaperpre-
sentsacomprehensivesurveyaboutthestandaloneMGprotectionissuesandschemes.Allnewtrendsand
schemesavailableandsuggestedforMGprotectionduringboththegridconnectedandthestandalone
modesaredescribedindetails.Also,thispaperpresentsasimpletechniqueforsolvingtheproblemsdueto
lowfaultcurrentphenomenainthestandaloneMG.Theproposedtechniqueisimplementedbycon-
nectingallMGloadsneutralpointswiththeMGearthingsystemneutralline.Theproposedtechnique
suppressesthetouchvoltagesatallMGbuses.Also,theproposedschemeresultsindoublingtheMGfault
currentinthestandalonemode.Consequently,theMGprotectiondevicescaneasilydetectanddiffer-
entiatebetweenthefaultdisturbancesandtheoverloadconditions.Also,theproposedtechniquedamps
andsuppressesthetouchvoltagenotonlyatfaultlocationbutalsothroughalltheMGnetworkbuses.The
mostcommonfaulttypes(singlephasetogroundanddoublephasetoground)areanalyzedindetails.
Resultsprovedthat,employingtheproposedtechniqueabletosolvethelowfaultcurrentandthetouch
voltagesproblemsfromtheirroots.Noadditionalhardwareisrequiredforimplementingthenewscheme.
Theproposedtechniqueisverysimpleandhighlyeconomicalattractive.
