As part of the Egyptian state's comprehensive developmental achievements since the June 30 Revolution, and as part of the ongoing construction and development process, under the patronage of Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of Assiut University, and the supervision of Dr. Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, Assiut University Hospitals continued to record qualitative successes that strengthen its position as one of the largest medical edifices in Egypt and a major source of advanced health care in the governorates of Upper Egypt.
Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy emphasized that the significant advancements witnessed in the university’s hospitals reflect the Egyptian state’s direct support of the healthcare sector after the June 30 revolution, which paid special attention to this sector and provided it with all possible capabilities.
He highlighted that the hospitals’ ongoing success in achieving international accreditations and developing organ transplant services and advanced surgeries is a testament to the dedicated efforts of the medical teams and their constant pursuit of excellence in patient care across Upper Egypt.
Assiut University President also emphasized that the university hospitals continue their pioneering role in serving patients, and remain a medical citadel in Upper Egypt, contributing strongly to the realization of the goals of the new republic and the state's vision for sustainable development in the health sector.
Assiut University Hospitals have made notable progress in healthcare quality. Seven university hospitals—including the Women’s Health Hospital, Neuropsychiatry and Neurosurgery, Children, Heart, Al-Rajhi Liver Hospital, Urology Surgery Hospital, and the Private Treatment Department of the Main University Hospital—successfully renewed their ISO 9001:2015 certification, affirming their commitment to the highest standards of medical and administrative performance.
In a further step toward enhancing safety standards, the Infection Control Administration also obtained ISO 9001 certification.
Additionally, the Surgical Pathology Laboratory received accreditation from the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) under ISO 15189:2022 standards for specialized pathology testing.
Three medical sectors managed to achieve a new milestone by obtaining the College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation, namely: Clinical Pathology Laboratories, Main Hospital Blood Bank, and Women's Health Hospital, becoming the first public and private university laboratories in Egypt to achieve this prestigious accreditation.
Assiut University Hospitals has witnessed a remarkable development in the field of organ transplantation. Al-Rajhi Liver Hospital received a three-year license renewal from the Higher Committee for Organ Transplantation under the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, after successfully performing 110 liver transplants with a success rate of more than 85% according to international standards.
In another achievement, the kidney transplant unit at the University Hospital for Urology and Nephrology recorded the "platinum number" by performing 75 successful kidney transplants, which helped save many patients with kidney failure in Upper Egypt.
The Cornea and Vision Correction Surgery Unit also continued its achievements, performing 12 corneal grafts recently, bringing the total number of cases to more than 60 since the unit was established in 2019, at a cost borne by the state.
The Hand and Microsurgery Unit at Assiut University Hospitals is one of the world's leading centers, where it continues to achieve successes in transplantation and reattachment of amputated limbs, to be the first of its kind in the Middle East and among the four largest centers in the world, while receiving international medical teams annually for training in this delicate specialty.
The university medical sector witnessed the introduction of advanced technologies that are comparable to the most prestigious treatment systems in the world, most notably the start of using the 3D cardiac scanner (Carto) at the University Heart Hospital to treat patients with atrial fibrillation with cautery, with the first operations having a 100% success rate.
As part of the digital transformation, the Trauma and Emergency Hospital launched an online booking service for outpatient clinics, which facilitates the booking procedures for patients and reduces waiting times.
The Advanced Fetal Care Unit at the Women's Health Hospital also introduced the Interventional Fetal Therapy service for early detection of birth defects and surgical intervention when necessary.
Assiut University Hospitals enhanced cooperation with both public and private institutions to strengthen medical infrastructure. A protocol with the Arab African International Bank was signed to fund infrastructure development and facility upgrades.
Another protocol was signed with Assiut National University to provide comprehensive health insurance services to its students, covering emergency services, outpatient clinics, lab tests, imaging, and urgent surgeries.
In a qualitative initiative, university hospitals received advanced medical equipment worth more than EGP 18.5 mn as part of cooperation between Kuwait Finance House, Wafaa for Egypt ( WOTE) and Misr El-Khair Foundation, including ultrasound machines, refrigerators for blood preservation, and a cautery machine for treating tumors, which is the first of its kind in Upper Egypt.
