In light of the comprehensive development boom that Egypt is experiencing after the June 30 revolution, Assiut University continues its pioneering role in supporting sustainable development, especially in the health sector, as Assiut University Hospitals continues to achieve successive achievements, under the patronage of Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy, President of the University, and under the supervision of Dr. Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University Hospitals.
Dr. Ahmed El-Minshawy affirmed that Assiut University Hospitals represent one of the most important health care edifices in Upper Egypt, with its hospitals and specialized units that provide integrated diagnostic and therapeutic services, in addition to performing the most accurate surgical operations by a distinguished group of doctors, nurses and administrators, stressing that the development of university hospitals reflects the great interest and support from the state and the university for this prestigious medical edifice.
In recent years, the university hospitals have witnessed a series of major openings and qualitative expansions, including several strategic projects, most notably the opening of new departments equipped with the latest medical equipment, comprehensive development of intensive care units, and expansion of reception and emergency capabilities, which enhances their ability to provide urgent and effective services to millions of patients who visit them annually from various governorates of Upper Egypt and beyond.
Dr. El-Minshawy pointed out that the integrated medical city at Assiut University now includes numerous specialized hospitals, such as the Main University Hospital, the Children’s Hospital, the Women’s Health Hospital, the Urology Hospital, the Neuropsychiatric and Neurosurgery Hospital, Al-Rajhi Liver Hospital, the Heart Hospital, the Emergency and Trauma Hospital, New Assiut Hospital, Om Al-Qosour Hospital, and the Student Hospital, making it the largest integrated academic medical system in Upper Egypt.
The university president emphasized that the major expansions and openings within Assiut University hospitals are the result of continuous work and effort, within a comprehensive development plan, with the aim of making a qualitative leap in the level of medical service, focusing on developing infrastructure, providing hospitals with the latest medical equipment, expanding reception and treatment capacities, supporting medical and administrative staff, and providing high-quality health services, in line with the new republic's goals in improving the level of health care for citizens.
In recent years, Assiut University hospitals have witnessed a series of major openings and qualitative expansions, including the opening of the integrated orthopedic surgery department at the trauma hospital, which includes 190 beds, 8 modern operating rooms with a capsule system, and a 27-bed intensive care unit, which increased the hospital's efficiency in providing specialized surgical services.
The Trauma Unit of the new Trauma and Emergency Hospital was also inaugurated, which includes an emergency reception equipped with the latest medical devices and equipment, including 20 examination beds and 15 cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR ) beds, in addition to advanced emergency operating rooms, diagnostic radiology and ultrasound departments.
As part of the development plan, the general reception unit at the Main Hospital was upgraded at a cost of EGP 39 million. The upgrade included equipping examination rooms, observation wards, and intensive care units with the latest medical devices, significantly enhancing the hospital’s readiness for critical cases.
In a related context, the new university oncology hospital is one of the largest national health projects in Upper Egypt, built on an area of 15,000 square meters according to the latest international medical specifications, and includes all diagnostic and therapeutic specialties necessary for the treatment of oncology.
The Children’s Hospital has also opened a Pediatric Chest Endoscopy Unit costing over EGP 3 million, offering advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services for pediatric respiratory diseases. Furthermore, a Spina Bifida Clinic was inaugurated at the Urology Surgery Hospital, the first of its kind among university hospitals.
As part of the efforts to improve the work environment, a 23-room, double-room residence for Egyptian and foreign doctors was inaugurated at a cost of more than EGP 5 mn, and the central kitchen at the university hospitals was developed according to the latest health and safety standards, at a cost of EGP 3 million.
In the Neuropsychiatric and Neurosurgery Hospital, a large conference hall equipped with the latest interactive presentation technology was inaugurated, along with a specialized clinic for pemphigus foliaceus patients and a psychological support clinic for oncology patients, which provides integrated therapeutic and psychological services.
The development plan did not neglect to support intensive care units, as the capacity of the critical care unit in the Department of Internal Medicine was increased to 24 beds, in addition to the opening of Family Medicine Clinics at the Main University Hospital to provide comprehensive medical services for all age groups.
In the field of laboratory services, several specialized units were inaugurated within the Clinical Pathology Department, including a bone marrow aspiration room and a therapeutic blood bank unit at the Orman University Hospital. Furthermore, the first mobile blood donation unit in Upper Egypt was launched, at a cost of EGP 3.5 million, donated by the “Wafaa’ Le Masr” Foundation (WOTE).
Additionally, the Outpatient Clinics building for the General Medical Administration was fully renovated to serve university students, and several specialized units were inaugurated at the Neuropsychiatric and Neurosurgery Hospital, including the Spine and Spinal Cord Surgery and Endoscopy Clinic, the Women's Neurology Department, the Neurology Intermediate Care Unit, the Nursing Training and Continuing Education Unit, and the Legal Affairs Department at the hospital.
