The department of Geology offers a program of instruction that focuses on the origin, evolution, structure, and dynamics of the earth. It offers a Bachelor degree in which students get choose one among the three specializations: Geology, Geophysics, and Geology Chemistry.

The goal of the Bachelor degree is to provide students with a broad and sound education that leads to general and specialized knowledge which is intellectually challenging and stimulating.

Our department offers classes in core training and specialized topics, as well as integrative courses that build a broad overview in Geology.

The purpose of the undergraduate program in Geological Sciences is

  • To equip the  students with a broad background in the fundamentals of the earth sciences and the quantitative, analytical, and communication skills necessary to conduct research and think critically about questions involving the Earth.

  • To provide the students with field trips to a geologically suitable area like New Valley, Sinai, Eastern Desert, and Red Sea Coast every year during his B.Sc. courses.

The goals of the field trips:

  • To gain the core knowledge and confidence needed to conduct basic investigations and sampling in the field.
  • To teach the basic steps involved in collecting and recording a wide variety of data in the field and the various steps involved in producing a geologic map and constructing geological cross-sections from this data.
  • To use field data to critically evaluate ideas and interpretations proposed by previous workers regarding the geomorphologic, stratigraphic, structural, sedimentology, metamorphic, and intrusive relationships.

We also offer Summer training for geology students (2-3 weeks in professional companies)

The training is designed to provide students with an overview of the techniques, information, fundamentals, and concepts used in different fields. This training equip our Geology students with early industrial experience covering a broad range of subjects in the field of mining, cement industry, phosphate industry, hydrogeology, petroleum, soil science besides environment where geologists have a key role to play at the investigation and assessment stages and have much to offer at the identification and remediation stages.
